When a man named Bracco dies, he utters the name Gregory Arkadin, which leads Guy van Stratten on an adventure with intent to meet the mysterious multimillionaire. Upon meeting him, Arkadin hires Guy to investigate his own past, claiming that he has no recollection of his life before the winter of 1927.
